The course contains both theory and practical exercises and comprises a total of 18 lesson hours of 40 minutes at DMTC
The training is divided into four parts:
– Section A: Self-studies with Pre-reading and video corresponding to 4 hours teaching.
– Section B: Classroom theory lessons combined with workshops and role-plays 18 hours.
– Section C: Self-studies after course to reinforce learning 4 hours.
– Section D: Optional onboard follow-up to consolidate learning with coaching to assist implementation.

IMO Model Course 1.39 “Leadership and Teamwork”
This model course is intended to provide a person with the knowledge, skill and understanding of leadership and teamwork at the operational level on board a ship. 
The course is designed to meet STCW requirements for the application of leadership and team working skills, in accordance with the 2010 Manila Amendments, specifically as stated in table A-II/1, A-III/1 and A-III/6, Function: Controlling the operation of the ship and care for persons on board at the operational level.

Target group:
Onboard officers (and crew) from all departments and all shore-based staff with direct or indirect communication links to ships.

Course goal:
On completion of the course the participants should be able to:
– Demonstrate sufficient understanding and knowledge of the relationship factors in safety leadership by creating trust and psychological safety that encourage and inspire employees. 
– Understand the powerful role of emotions by recognizing and managing our own emotions and understand and influence the emotions of others especially when we are under pressure.
