Course Content

The course contains both theory and practical exercises and comprises a total of 18 lesson hours of 40 minutes at DMTC.

The training is divided into four parts:

Section A: Self-studies with pre-reading and video corresponding to 4 hours teaching.

Section B: Classroom theory lessons combined with workshops and role-plays 18 hours.

Section C: Self-studies after course to reinforce learning 4 hours.

Section D: Optional onboard follow-up to consolidate learning with coaching to assist implementation.

IMO Model Course 1.39 “Leadership and Teamwork”:

This model course is intended to provide a person with the knowledge, skill and understanding of leadership and teamwork at the operational level on board a ship.

The course is designed to meet STCW requirements for the application of leadership and team working skills, in accordance with the 2010 Manila Amendments, specifically as stated in table A-II/1, A-III/1 and A-III/6, Function: Controlling the operation of the ship and care for persons on board at the operational level.

Target group:

Onboard officers (and crew) from all departments and all shore-based staff with direct or indirect communication links to ships.

Course goal:

On completion of the course the participants should be able to:

Demonstrate sufficient understanding and knowledge of the relationship factors in safety leadership by creating trust and psychological safety that encourage and inspire employees. 

Understand the powerful role of emotions by recognizing and managing our own emotions and understand and influence the emotions of others especially when we are under pressure.

Build resilience into operations by introducing limits for normal operation and operation in the safety margin.

Understand why and how operations drift into failure.

Develop the next generation leaders through mentoring and coaching.

Prerequisites:

No entry standards.

Course continuation:

3 days.
