RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

DMTC is there to encourage a more proactive stance from the maritime industry, allowing it to go beyond error prevention through compliance to actively constructing operational safety by anticipating and planning for unexpected events. This builds resilience, a big step towards loss prevention. The objective of the Resource Management and Maritime Safety Leadership training/courses is to facilitate timely interventions by team members to reduce the risk of mistakes and misunderstandings leading to an undesired situation. Everyone, regardless of experience, will occasionally make mistakes due to various circumstances. This is where a well-trained, proactive team will be able to use their Resource Management skills. The question is not why a “human error” occurred; the question is why it was not detected and why it made sense for the operator to act this way.

Our Instructors/Facilitators have extensive, practical onboard experience in senior positions and have been actively working with BRM and ERM for +20 years. Being able to directly refer to their own experiences is reassuring to the participants and a vital aspect of our training credibility.

The BRM/ERM and MSL courses should only be seen as an introduction to the subject. The best environment for learning is provided onboard and shore offices and for that reason DMTC recommends follow-up coaching to consolidate the learning and make sure it is implemented onboard. Without follow-up, most people go back into old behaviours and habits and the investment in training is lost.
